OpenHydro is an Irish technology business that designs and manufactures marine turbines to generate renewable energy from tidal streams.

The company's vision is to deploy farms of tidal turbines under the world's oceans - silently and invisibly generating electricity at no cost to the environment.

OpenHydro's technology enables the ocean's immense energy to be harnessed for the benefit of all. The electricity produced is completely renewable since it relies on tides that are created by the gravitational effect of the sun and moon.

OpenHydro was formed in 2005 after the negotiation of world rights to the Open-Centre Technology in late 2004. The technology was developed in the USA over an eight year period prior to 2004.

OpenHydro’s technology is based on the unique Open-Centre Turbine that converts the movement of water directly into electricity.

OpenHydro Group Ltd. completed the installation of the first tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland.

The Open-Centre Turbine is the first tidal technology to reach the stage of permanent deployment in the Atlantic Ocean.

This will be the UK and Ireland’s first grid connected tidal turbine.

In January 2007 OpenHydro was selected by Nova Scotia Power following a global procurement process that considered over 20 technology suppliers world-wide.

Nova Scotia Power provides more than 97 percent of the electricity generation, transmission and distribution across the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia.

OpenHydro are currently expanding operations which includes the set up of a Design and Manufacturing facility in Greenore, Co Louth.
