The Opportunity

An established engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior Bridge Engineer with a minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience to join its bridge and civil-structural engineering team.

The successful candidate will contribute to a diverse portfolio of bridge and multidisciplinary civil engineering projects, working across different structural materials and forms. This role provides an opportunity to take ownership of design activities, support project delivery, supervise engineers and engage directly with clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Work on the design and assessment of existing and new bridge and civil structures, including superstructures, substructures, foundations and articulation systems.
• Contribute to early project stages, including scoping, surveys, inspections, investigations, optioneering and scheme development.
• Undertake and manage preliminary and detailed bridge design.
• Carry out structural analysis, calculations and analytical modelling, including finite element analysis.
• Review structural drawings and technical documentation.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications and contract documentation.
• Undertake independent design checking and provide technical support during construction.
• Coordinate with clients, local and national authorities, consultants and design-and-build contractors.
• Support the preparation of bids and tender submissions.
• Supervise and provide technical guidance to bridge design engineers.
• Assist senior project team members with the successful delivery of projects within agreed budgets and timescales.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

• An honours degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Level 8 or equivalent).
• Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional institution such as Engineers Ireland, ICE or IStructE.
• At least 7 years’ post-qualification experience in detailed bridge design.
• Strong experience in bridge structural design and project delivery.
• Experience managing or supervising teams involved in detailed bridge design.
• Ability to undertake and manage structural analytical modelling, including finite element analysis.
• Strong knowledge of structural analysis and modelling software.
• Excellent technical understanding of bridge design and structural detailing.
• Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience engaging with clients and other external stakeholders.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• A flexible, motivated and focused approach with a strong work ethic.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver work to tight deadlines.
• Fluent or highly proficient spoken and written English.

Desirable

• Knowledge and practical experience of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and relevant bridge design standards.
• Excellent knowledge of Eurocodes applicable to bridge design.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Experience providing construction-stage technical support.
