Our client, a leading environmental and planning consultancy, is seeking to appoint a Senior Ecologist to assist with a strong and diverse pipeline of projects throughout the UK. The Senior Ecologist will work closely with the Ecology and EIA/ Planning team. The closing date for applications is 13th December 2017.

Responsibilities include

* Manage projects, teams and sub-consultants to ensure projects in the UK and South Africa are delivered to schedule and budget
* Manage, coordinate and liaise with in-house specialists as well as sub-consultants, developers and other relevant bodies
* Provide specific and strategic advice to clients relating to projects across a wide range of sectors
* Financial control and budgeting responsibility as project manager
* Review the work of others to ensure high quality output
* Manage and undertake a range of ecological services, particularly for bats but also for birds and freshwater ecology, at all scales and across sectors
* Plan and organise protected species surveys, with a focus on bats
* Manage, maintain and calibrate bat survey equipment
* Use bat call analysis programmes (Advanced level)
* Develop and implement systems for bat call analysis, data analysis and interrogation
* Understand and adhere to Arcus’ quality and health & safety systems
* Represent the company at client meetings, conferences and other events
* Prepare and/or assist with tender submissions for new projects
* Provide advice and support to junior members of staff
* Perform business development role in technical field, including pursuing new opportunities and developing existing relationships

Qualifications:

* Post-graduate degree including Zoology and Freshwater Ecology
* Registration with South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions
* Ability to work under protected species survey and development licences

Experience:

* Managing and undertaking a range of ecology surveys
* Ecological Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plans
* Working with other environmental disciplines
* Financial and project management
* Tendering and proposals
* Managing sub-contractors
* Experience of working with the ISO 9001 quality management system
* Business development and client relationships
* Mentoring and training colleagues

Skills:

* Excellent communication skills (written and spoken)
* Ability to speak Afrikaans
* Good IT skills, including word processing, spreadsheets and GIS (ArcGIS)
* Quantitative, numerical and analytical skills, including Proficiency with R statistical software
* Collision Risk Modelling
* High attention to detail

Knowledge:

* Thorough knowledge of bat ecology
* Protected species licensing and mitigation, particularly bats
* South African ecology
* Understanding of the UK and South African planning systems
* Understanding of relevant UK and South African legislation and policies
* Local and international (IFC and World Bank) good practice guidelines
